The Croatian crypto scene joined in the worldwide festivities for Bitcoin Pizza Day as PizzaDAO hosted its 5th annual Global Pizza Party on Thursday, May 22. The event, held at the House of Blockchain (HoB) in Zagreb, brought together around 40 blockchain enthusiasts for an evening of fun, networking, and, of course, pizza.

“May 22 marks one of the most iconic moments in crypto history — the day 10,000 BTC were exchanged for two pizzas in 2010. The first-ever real-world use of $BTC, now globally celebrated as Bitcoin Pizza Day. This year, just like last, Pizza DAO kept the tradition alive at House of Blockchain in Zagreb,” Pizza DAO and local Pizza DAO members Okan Agur and Filip Milosheski explained.

This year’s celebration in Zagreb was part of PizzaDAO’s largest global initiative to date, with over 20,000 attendees expected across more than 400 cities worldwide. Powered by support from Stand With Crypto, the World Pizza Champions, and many other partners, the event aimed to honor the roots of Bitcoin culture with a laid-back, inclusive atmosphere.

The Zagreb party featured hot slices, a crypto-themed giveaway, and a special NFT drop for attendees.

“We did it the proper way: with pizzas, hosted a crypto giveaway, and an NFT giveaway. But most importantly, we celebrated with a lot of good energy. Personally, I love events that carry that raw energy, and PizzaDAO has been nurturing that spirit for years. You could notice that everyone was having fun—crypto OGs meeting fresh faces from the space, the perfect networking zone. Thanks to PizzaDAO for their initiative, and thanks to all sponsors for their support. Same time next year? Absolutely,” Milosheski adds.

Bitcoin Pizza Day marks a turning point in the story of cryptocurrency. On May 22, 2010, Florida-based programmer Laszlo Hanyecz made a post on a Bitcoin forum offering 10,000 BTC to anyone who could deliver him two pizzas. A fellow user took him up on the offer, and the transaction became the first known use of Bitcoin to purchase a physical good.

At the time, the 10,000 BTC were worth about $41. Today, that same amount would be valued at over $1 billion, making those pizzas the most expensive in history—and one of the most iconic moments in the crypto world.
